New York City Establishes New Law To Protect Construction Workers

You don't have to tell construction workers that they are in one of the most dangerous industries in the country. Although numerous laws have been created to try and protect these hardworking individuals, if an employer doesn't provide the proper training, an employee may not have the skills and knowledge they need to avoid being hurt on the job.

Local Law 196: Construction Workers Require Training

In order to ensure that all construction workers have the opportunity to get necessary training, New York City has enacted Local Law 196. This law requires all workers and supervisors to take safety training. For workers, 40 - 55 hours of safety training is required and supervisors must obtain 60 - 75 hours of safety training.

Those in the construction industry have until December of 2018 to obtain at least a Limited Site Safety Training Card which includes 30 hours of safety training.

Full training must have been obtained by March of 2019, for which construction workers will receive a Safety Site Training Card.

Is Safety Really An Issue On Construction Sites?

Yes, in fact, the majority of all injuries sustained by construction workers could have been avoided if the correct safety precautions had been taken. For example, just recently a man was killed when the illegal hoist he was using collapsed and crushed him. The Department of Buildings issued a partial stop work order until an investigation can be completed.

The sad truth is that many employers don't care about their employees health, they only care about saving time and money. This is why laws are being created that forces employers to put workers through the required training.
